Years ago, many hospitals lost their in-house laboratory expertise due to outsourcing projects. As a result, more than 50% of hospital laboratories are no longer legally part of the hospitals but are instead owned by large regional laboratory groups.

Due to the high return expectations of laboratory providers, the cost of laboratory services—especially in hospital laboratories—is rising. Previously common cross-subsidization is no longer supported for compliance reasons. Each revenue stream is now required to generate profit—this is the mandate set by investors.
